The Baumes volcano stopped erupting a long time ago. What it left behind is basalt, and twelve hectares of vines in a single block on its flank, north of Pézenas.
That soil gives the wines of Domaine Allegria their signature: freshness, minerality, salinity, and a structure that holds without ever weighing anything down. Nine Mediterranean grape varieties grow side by side, and the oldest parcel is past forty years old.
Every parcel is vinified separately, in a concrete tank sized for it. Nothing is blended until the blend itself.
White
Two grapes, two treatments. Marsanne vinified in tank brings the fresh fruit and vineyard peach, Roussanne aged in barrel brings the honeyed, riper notes. Blended, they give this luminous cuvée.
Its brightness, structure and elegance let it age happily for three years.
Red
The cuvée the estate is already proudest of. A blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre, two thirds raised in tank and the rest in once-used barrels.
There is a lot of elegance here: dark fruit on the nose with peppery notes. On the palate the Syrah leads, with violet and a real minerality. The tannins are settled and carry a remarkable length.
Red 2020
The estate’s finest parcel of Syrah, aged ten months in new barrels. This is Allegria’s grand vin, the one they put the best of themselves into.
The best pairings are the simplest ones. Ten years of cellaring in the strongest vintages.
